MEET DIRECTOR LILY CADE
Proclaiming herself Porn Valley’s “Gold Star” Lesbian , Lily is a lesbian, a feminist and an adult performer. Lily Cade is one of those lesbians that gets more pussy then most guys . With plenty of scenes under her belt and a successful website LilyCade.com I just had to interview this young lady. Not only is she very sexy , she’s seems to be a smart articulated women who is on the road to success . A native Los Angelina girl, horse lover, educated; Lily also has an talent that’s not yet been brought to the foreground. She loves to direct and it is my pleasure to share with you director Lily Cade and what was captured during our conversations.
MK:How did you make the transition from being in front of the camera to being behind it directing videos?
LILY: I always wanted to direct and that was part of my motivation for becoming an adult actress. I’m a film school grad (USC) and my ultimate goal is make adult films that are more cinematic and story driven, although I do like shooting the amateur/gonzo stuff too.
Anyway, I started shooting behind the camera in May 2010, for Homegrown Video. I looked at the back box of a movie I was in and it said something like “email us to send in your sex tapes.” I emailed that company and didn’t get a response, but it got me thinking about making my own content so I sought out buyers and found Homegrown and a few others. I was able to officially start a production company and use the money I made to invest in equipment.
MK: When was your first video directing debut , and who did it involved and give us a tile?
LILY: My first movie was Art School Dykes for Nightingale Pictures (which received an honorable mention at the Feminst Porn Awards). I got the gig because I was the only girl that showed up on time to set to another movie that Nightingale was making. I hung around chatting with the crew, and they asked me if I would like to direct a movie. I was elated. I spent the next two months being stressed out of my mind because I just wasn’t going to feel ok until the movie was done. Now I’m a lot more relaxed.
I’m currently directing for Filly Films. My first movie for them – Hard Working Girls – is out right now. I have two more shot and in post production – Live Nerd Girls (which I’m really proud of) and Butches and Babes.
It’s something that I was always interested in, but I want to thank everyone that gave me a chance: Homegrown Video, Girlfriends Films, Gooddykeporn.com, Nightingale Pictures, and of course, Filly Films.
MK: What’s the best advice you give to young girls as they get into adult videos?
I think that it is really important to know what you want out of the world of adult film. Don’t allow yourself to get pressured into doing things you don’t really want to do or that make you feel bad. Do porn because you enjoy it, not because you have to do it. It really helps to have other things that you do, both for money and for fun. It’s a shitty place to be in to have to take a scene you’d rather not do because it’s that or not pay the rent.
Be a professional. Show up on time, be prepared and do the best scene you can possibly do. Find something you like about your scene partner and some way to connect with that person. There’s a lot of girls out there and it’s good to be the one producers know they can call when someone else flakes (I’ve been that girl a lot).
LILY: I’m a lesbian, so as a performer I’ll always be strictly girl/girl only. I actually don’t even do solo scenes (just not hot for me – and why do it if it isn’t?)
I have shot some boy/girl behind the camera, mostly amateur couples stuff. Girl/girl is my passion for obvious reasons, but I am not against shooting other things.
MK: What’s the day like for Lily Cade on the set, if you’re behind the camera?
LILY: If I’m shooting a little amateur scene, I’ll light the set, print out the paperwork, and wait for my talent to arrive. I take some stills, scan IDs and get paperwork signed, shoot the video and pay the talent. I’m usually done in an hour and a half.
Directing a whole movie is more involved. I usually have a two or three person crew (although on Art School Dykes, there were twelve guys). I’ll get up early, pack my van, get my paperwork in order (including bringing copies of the script) and head to set. On set, we set up lights, shoot stills, reset the lights for video, rehearse the dialogue and start shooting. I spend a fair amount of time on the dialogue because the set-ups, even though they are small, are important to me. Once we get into the sex, I don’t direct a whole lot (I’ll talk to the talent before the sex about what the energy of the scene should be, or if there is something specific that should happen) unless there is a problem – like someone is in an unshootable position.
Before the actual shoot day, I’ve written a script and sent it the talent, prepared story boards and gone over what we’re shooting with the crew. I may have gone shopping for costumes or props or looked for a cool location.
MK: What’s are the future plans for Director Lily Cade?
LILLY: I love what I’m doing and I want to keep doing it. I am going to continue making lesbian movies for Filly, and I’ve got a few other projects in the works for other people. I also have a few non porn projects in the works.
LILY: I like putting girls together that I think would be hot together – that’s really fun for me. I like writing and creating stories that I think are hot. I also like to insert a little bit of humor into my movies – I have fun messing around with porno tropes and poking fun at them (such as in my pizza “boy” scene in Hard Working Girls).
LILY: I do everything myself, so I sometimes get bogged down and overworked. That’s really the only complaint I have.
MK: How would you change it , if possible?
LILY: I’d love to have bigger budgets for my movies but I think that’s something that will come with time.
MK: Well thank you Lily Cade for me giving the opportunity and your time for such an enlighten and informational interview on the side that so few know about. Hopefully fans and colleagues in the industry will appreciate your directing skills.
LILY: Thanks for having me and for your great website Mikhael, You can find more of me at lilycade.com.
